The purpose of this International Standard is to enable organizations to establish the systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, use and consumption. Implementation of this International Standard is intended to lead to reductions of emissions of greenhouse gases and related environmental impacts and energy costs through systematic management of energy.ISO 50001 specifies requirements for energy use and consumption, including measurement, documentation and information, design and procurement practices for equipment, systems, processes and staff that contribute to energy performance.ISO 50001 – Energy management system comprises following points: General Requirements: The purpose of ISO 50001 Documents are to enable organizations to establish the systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance. The standard is applicable to all the factors affecting energy use that can be controlled and influenced by an organization. ISO 50001 does not specify the criteria for energy performance. It provides a general purpose system that allows organizations to choose the performance standards they feel best meet their needs.
Management responsibility: In addition to providing general support, senior management should provide resources such as time, personnel, financial, material, etc., for the effective implementation of the EMS. Management commitment is crucial to the successful implementation of EMS. It should be communicated and made visible to the entire organization to encourage the active participation of all staff to comply with the EMS. Energy Policy: The energy policy is a cornerstone of the implementation and improvement of EMS organization and energy performance in its scope and limitations. The policy provides a statement of high-level overview of the intention of management that members of the organization should apply to their professional activities. The policy also provides a framework for an organization to set objectives and energy targets and energy management action plans associated to further improve its energy performance. Energy Planning: The element of the legal and other requirements to the ISO 50001 standard is intended to ensure that the organization complies with applicable legislation and other requirements relating to energy consumption, consumption and efficiency which it subscribes. Legal requirements include international governmental regulatory requirements, national, regional and local applicable to the energy use of the organization.
Management Review: The management review will help the organization achieve continuous improvement and to evaluate the suitability, adequacy and effectiveness of the EMS. It should be noted that although the management review needs to cover the scope of the entire EMS, not all elements of the system must be examined at a time. The review process may take place over a period of time.
